The History of Captain ProjectCaptain Project began in early 1996 as a creative outlet for Timo Jaakkimainen, the creator. He was working for a high tech business consulting firm and wanted to try his hand at drawing a cartoon series about life in a consulting company. The strip's original intent was to follow the life of a principal character, a worker who secretly hid a double identity as "Captain Project". It would be a continuing series and would contain characters for common concepts and phrases in the consulting and computer industry. The humour would be more subtle. The first two episodes followed this vision closely. Unfortunately, it was found that readers did not seem to grasp this concept. Following some conceptual changes, the strip was re-released. This time, it addressed office life situations more directly and dealt with them in a more common manner, very much along the lines of the successful Dilbert cartoon. This new direction was warmly received by readers and proved more successful. "Captain Project" continued in regular distribution through only one channel: a bi-monthly internal newsletter published by the consulting firm for which Timo worked. Therefore, while the number of episodes may appear low, it did in fact come out on a regular basis. In 1999, due to other personal interests, Timo stopped regular publication of "Captain Project". He continues to revive the strip when he finds the time and interests to do so. |
